Two Trails to Meet in Comstock Park
Next summer the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail in Comstock Park will meet the Fred Meijer Pioneer Trail in Walker, enabling Trail users to cycle, or even hike, from Hart to Comstock Park to Cadillac on an uninterrupted, continuous trail.
An extension of Pioneer Trail was recently completed from Alpine Avenue east to where Three Mile Road dead ends, and then through some easements, along Hillside Drive and then to the intersection of Lankamp Street and West River Drive. That extension is a combination of 10-foot wide concrete sidewalk and asphalt paving. The final leg of the extension, another 10-foot wide segment, will extend along the east side of West River Drive to North Park Street in Comstock Park where the two Trails will meet. That will be completed next summer and will include a “refuge island” on West River Drive at Lankamp to make crossing to the east side of West River Drive easier.
Tom Byle, assistant director of engineering for the Kent County Road Commission, said the final approximately one-mile long segment to North Park Street will take careful planning because there are wetlands on the east side of West River Drive.
The project is paid for by a TAP (Transportation Alternative Program) grant. The program focuses on developing areas for non-motorized activities.
