DAIRY DE-LITE Nate and Raechel Macqueen are the new owners of Dairy De-Lite, the iconic ice cream shop in downtown Comstock Park. With the new owners the shop has stayed in the family.

Raechel’s father Randy Wrona purchased the shop at 3950 West River Drive in 1993. Lynn Meyer, Wrona’s sister and Raechel’s aunt, bought it from her brother after working there for three years. Meyer said she and her husband bought the shop mainly to employ their five children while they were in school. Most of the employees throughout the years have been family members, including Raechel. So when she and Nate learned Meyers was selling the shop, they were first in line to buy.

“I worked there seven summers while I was in high school and college,” said Raechel. “It’s a fun place to be.

“We’ve always wanted to own a small business.” It’s a busy schedule for the couple who both have full time jobs, and then come to their home in Comstock Park, to go back to the ice cream shop by 6 p.m. until close. So far the couple has no plans to make any major changes.

“For now we’re just maintaining while we learn,” said Nate. “There’s been some ups and downs. Maybe next summer we’ll see if we want to add something.”

The Macqueens moved to Comstock Park three years ago and are enthusiastic about the community and the shop’s location on the corner of West River Drive and Lamoreaux Drive.

“This is an awesome location,” Raechel said. “It’s a good stopping point (for) people biking, walking the (White Pine) Trail. There’s the library, the (Dwight Lydell) Park. People can come for ice cream.”

The menu hasn’t changed. The draw is the 21 flavors of hard Hudsonville ice cream. There’s also hot dogs, chili dogs, Italian sausage, with all the fixings, as well as malts, flurries, shakes, and soft ice cream.

Both of the Macqueens are originally from Rockford, graduating from Rockford High School. Nate attended Western Michigan University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in supply chain management. Raechel attended Aquinas College earning a bachelor’s degree in community leadership and business. Nate now works in supply chain management for Gordon Food Services. Raechel works for the Better Business Bureau Serving Western Michigan in their foundation.
